Nam Kra Jeab
Serves 4 Cooks in 60 minutes Difficulty Easy
Nam Kra Jeab or Roselle Juice as it would be called in English is considered to be a very healthy drink in Thailand. Made from dried Roselle flowers it can help relieve fevers and is good for the body, especially the stomach. It can also help you need to go to the bathroom. Roselle Juice is high in vitamin C.
If you have a sweet tooth you can make Roselle Juice with sugar. I prefer to make it without. I always add a couple of Pandan Leaves to my mix. Padan is meant to be good for your heart. All in all this is a great drink to freshen your body.
If you can source dried Roselle flowers where you live then this juice is very easy to prepare.
Ingredients
- 2 pandan leaves
- 25 dired roselle flowers
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1.5 L water
If you want to make the sweet version than you will need 4 tbsp of sugar, but Roselle Juice is much healthier without.
Method
- Wash the roselle flowers and pandan leaves two times in water.
- Bring the water to the boil in a large sauce pan, add all the ingredients, cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
- Pour the juice through a sieve and chill in the fridge.
To Serve
Serve with ice in a tall glass. Recently I stopped giving away complimentary water in plastic bottles. Now at my Khao Lak cooking class I have two large glass drink dispensers, one drinking water and the other my Roselle Juice. You can read more about this and my commitment to run a more eco friendly class here.
Please try this simple Thai drink at home, its so easy and fun. Hope you enjoy Nam Kra Jeab by Apple 🍎 Riverside Thai Cooking in Khao Lak.
